Mathematical Practices
All students K - 12 are expected to engaged in the "mathematical practices."
Computational Fluency
Computational fluency is described as the ability to compute with accuracy, flexibility, and efficiency (Adding It Up, 2001). Students can develop and improve their fluency through exposure, experience and discussion. At Driscoll, we believe that students should have the freedom to choose efficient strategies that work for them. Teachers will encourage students to stretch themselves to make connections between strategies, and to develop greater efficiency. Students should be able to explain both the process and the solution used. This promotes both an understanding of math, and can also help tease out some misconceptions. Howard County (MD) published a brochure about common strategies fourth grade students might use. Click here to download the brochure. |
