ECS (Enrichment and Challenge Support)Driscoll is very fortunate to have ECS Specialist Kyle Tompkins part-time at our school. Learn more about Brookline's Challenge Framework on the PSB (Public Schools of Brookline)'s official site. The PSB Challenge Framework is a classroom-centered approach. Educators collaborate to access the array of resources, instructional materials and strategies in order to provide challenging, rigorous, and relevant learning to all students. |
Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat do I do if I think my child isn't being challenged in math class?
First: talk to your child about what they are doing to engage themselves in math class, and take ownership over their learning. Are they thinking about ways to extend problems? Do they notice patterns? After that, you may want to discuss your concerns during your child's spring or fall conference, or schedule an appointment with your child's classroom teacher. (E-mail usually works best for scheduling.) The teacher may show you some student work samples or assessments, and/or discuss what a typical math block looks like. In addition to highlighting strength, ask what your child may need to work on. Often advanced students may have mastered computational skills but need support and instruction on justifying their thinking, or producing written explanations. The classroom teacher may involve one of Driscoll's Math or Enrichment & Challenge Specialists in the conversation. How do I learn more about enrichment opportunities offered at Driscoll? During the school day, most enrichment occurs within the classroom, an is available to all students. Driscoll's classroom teachers design many materials, use district resources, and collaborate regularly with Math Specialists and Enrichment and Challenge Support (ECS) teachers. To learn more, ask your child's classroom teacher. You can also learn more about Brookline's ECS Program on PSB's official website. Outside of school, Driscoll students are invited to participate in the competitive Math League (grades 4 - 6) and Math Counts (grades 7 & 8) teams. To learn more, click on Extracurricular Opportunities (under "Inside Math at Driscoll"). What are some things I can do at home? Our "homework help" section offers some suggestions of enrichment websites. |
